Summer Youth Employment Program Kicks Off!

On Wednesday, July 6, Columbia Housing hosted its internship orientation for the annual Summer Youth Employment Program and this year's 22 students.

During orientation, students met the supervisors from participating departments. Jordan Tribble, a rising freshman at the University of South Carolina stated, "The orientation was truly an amazing experience for the new interns. Personally, I got the opportunity to interview the CEO Yvonda Bean about what I could expect from my experience at Columbia Housing. I really liked that."

CEO Yvonda Bean summed it up this way, "This program gives our students ages 14-19 years old opportunities that few young people have at such a young age. We are delighted to play a role in their growth and development."

Thank you SVP Resident & Strategic Initiatives Taleshia Stewart for spearheading this important effort!

Summer Youth Employment Participants Visit Midlands Technical College Campus
The Power of Partnerships - We are better together!

Midlands Technical College (Airport Campus) hosted our 22 student interns for a College Tour.

Since many of the students are interested in STEM careers (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), the Surgical Technology and the Mechatronics workshops were a HUGE hit!

Thank you Midlands Technical College for showing us around and sharing your campus! Special thanks to Dr. Ronald Rhames for hosting, providing lunch, and even transporting our students!

Staff Success Story: Reginald Reese & Jermaine English
The Power of Partnerships - We are better together!

For the past year, Reginald Reese and Jermaine English have attended weekly training classes to update their maintenance technician skills while working toward a professional distinction within their industry.

Both Reese and English recently completed the first of two years in the Employee Empowerment Apprenticeship and Certification Program. Upon completion of the program, each will receive a national credential from the US Department of Labor for Building Maintenance Technicians. The program is made possible through a partnership with Midlands Technical College that provides a customized job-related education module that is specific to building maintenance proficiency and customer service skills.

Columbia Housing CEO Yvonda Bean applauds both Reese's and English's accomplishments and underscores the significance of the partnership with Midlands Technical College. "Columbia Housing is the only public housing authority in the country to provide the development/training and competency-based program certified by the United States Department of Labor. We are happy to offer this benefit to our maintenance technicians," concludes Bean.
