Building Community!
"It takes a village to raise a child."
"It takes a village to raise a child" is an African proverb that means an entire community of people must interact with children for those children to grow in a safe and healthy environment. Interim CEO Yvonda Bean believes in applying in the 'village' concept.
"We will ALWAYS show up for our residents," says Bean. "The Unity in the CommUNITY series and our supporting partners are key to building that village."
It was a beautiful time with our families in Latimer Manor for our first installment of the Unity in the CommUNITY series. The concept is simple: bring the resources directly to the people. The focus for this event was personal development, violence prevention, and youth engagement.
It was awesome and so was the response from the residents. In fact, many residents stopped Mrs. Bean to say how much they appreciated it and how helpful it was.
Unity in the CommUNITY - Latimer Manor Board of Commissioners Actively Engaged!
It makes a difference that our Board of Commissioners is actively engaged with our families AND with City leadership. That's huge for our Unity in the CommUNITY series.
Thank you Chairman Ernest Cromartie, III, Commissioner Selena Pickens, and City of Columbia Councilman Ed McDowell for your leadership & commitment to empower our families.
Community Partners Making a Difference!
"There is immense power when a group of people with similar interest gets together to work toward the same goals." - Idowu Koyenik
Saleemah Graham Flemming lost her daughter 15-year-old Sanaa Amenhotep, to gun violence in April 2021. She took that pain and turned it into a mentoring and healing program to help other facing tragic experiences.
Flemming's organization Mothers of Slain Teenagers (M.O.S.T) is one of several bringing their resources to our families in Latimer Manor.
