August Advocacy - Week 2 - Universal Housing Vouchers
In the second week of NAHRO's August Advocacy campaign, NAHRO is calling on Congress and the White House to provide a housing choice voucher to every family who is eligible for assistance.
Universal Housing Choice Vouchers are a crucial component of any affordable housing solution. However, only one out of every five families that qualify for federal rental assistance receives them. To enable greater access to this crucial resource, Congress must move funding for the Housing Choice Voucher program from discretionary to mandatory spending.

Provide Universal Housing Choice Vouchers
Urge Congress to address the affordable housing crisis by expanding the Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program to al eligible households.
- Even though federal rental assistance is proven to help reduce child poverty, homelessness, housing instability, and overcrowding, only 1 in 5 eligible households receive it.
- In January 2020, HUD reported at least 580,466 people were homeless, a 2.2% increase from 2019.
- Ensuring universal housing assistance to those in need would have broad, positive impacts on racial equity, education, healthcare, economic mobility, and reducing poverty.
Universal Housing Choice Vouchers are a crucial component of any affordable housing solution. Individuals and families with Housing Choice Vouchers pay approximately thirty (30) percent of their income toward rent, with the government paying the remainder directly to the landlord. This allows them to afford the stability of permanent housing and can offer low-income families more choices in where they live.
To enable greater access to this crucial resource, Congress must move funding for the Housing Choice Voucher program from discretionary to mandatory spending.
