Advocacy Alert - Affordable Housing IS Critical Infrastructure
On Friday, May 21, 2021, Columbia Housing out of an abundance of caution voluntarily relocated 24 families from the St. Andrews Terrace Apartments after the Columbia Fire Department found a gas leak on the property at 201-226 St. Andrews Terrace Road. We authorized Dominion Energy to cut off the gas until we can determine exactly where the gas fumes are coming from and how it can be remedied.
We really appreciate all of the heartfelt calls and messages we've received from concerned citizens inquiring about how they might be able to help.
Here is how you can help us:
President Biden's 'American Jobs Plan' recognizes that housing is infrastructure and it calls for resources to expand and preserve the country's supply of affordable homes, among other critical national investments. The $213 billion proposed housing investments include:
- Public Housing Capital Fund: $40 billion
- $20 billion in homeownership tax credits over 5 years
- Home upgrades, retrofits, and weatherization: $27 billion
Congress plans to make a once-in-a-generation investment in infrastructure and we need your help to make sure affordable housing is included!

Tell Congress that Housing IS Critical Infrastructure
Infrastructure week is finally here- the White House has proposed a large-scale, once-in-a-generation infrastructure package and Congress is beginning the process of assembling the legislation. Your voice is needed now to ensure that housing is included. Tell the President and Congress to include funding for housing in any infrastructure package that is considered.
Support Robust Funding for FY 2022 Transportation, HUD Funding
Congress is gearing up for its work on FY 2022 Transportation-HUD appropriations. Now more than ever, it is critical that Congress provide HUD with timely, robust funding levels so housing and community development providers can continue to serve their communities in the pandemic.
Tell your members of Congress to prioritize HUD funding in the upcoming FY 2022.
New communities like the Haven at Palmer Pointe in Columbia, SC are possible because of affordable housing initiatives supported by Congress.
